It was really nice to see everyone after such a long summer break.
Of course there were the usual dynamic new hairstyles and the cool t-shirts with funky messages, but all in all it was the same bunch of good-natured students I've come to appreciate over the last few years. I did hear some coughing and sniffling in addition to noticing a few people absent,so I assumed that there was probably something going around.Anyway I better load up on the vitamins so I don't catch it.
We took our time just catching up with each other. It was pretty much the best method to ease out way into our first English lesson of the fall term. I asked for a quick show of hands of how many students had traveled abroad during the summer vacation. I was surprised at the number of students who had remained in Japan.
Most of them looked pretty well rested with exception of one particular student who had been stopped by the authorities for speeding.
In the end he wasn't arrested for anything, but instead was hit with a huge fine that some of his classmates thought was rather excessive. His drivers license was suspended and he will be required to attend driving school. I again asked for a quick show of hands whether students thought the crime fit the punishment or not. Obviously they didn't think so.
I told my students that they will be held accountable for learning the vocabulary we discuss in class. Mastering new vocabulary is definitely a useful way to tweak one's English skills. Finally I gave my students a heads up that there will be a new course textbook used in the "Presentation English" class. They were soon off to the bookstore and of course to lunch. I look forward to seeing them all again in two weeks time.
